Brainteaser - Crafty Cubes

A craftsman has a wooden block shaped as a cube, measuring three inches on every side. He plans to slice it into 27 smaller cubes, each one-inch on a side. He knows he can achieve this in six straight cuts while keeping the pieces together. But, if he repositions the pieces after every slice, can he decrease the number of cuts?
